Baking Ingredient Weight Converter

Convert ingredient amounts between US cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, grams, ounces and pounds. Choose the ingredient first: volume-to-weight estimates depend on it.

Why ingredient-specific conversion matters

A cup is a measure of volume. A pound is a measure of mass. Flour, sugar and honey do not have the same weight for one cup, so a single universal cups-to-pounds conversion would give misleading answers. Select the actual ingredient and the correct measuring convention before converting.

How the calculator works

We first convert your amount into grams using the ingredient's grams-per-US-cup reference, then convert the resulting mass or volume to the requested unit. One avoirdupois pound is exactly 453.59237 grams and one ounce is 28.349523125 grams. For this kitchen calculator, one US cup equals 16 US tablespoons or 48 US teaspoons.

grams = US cups × reference grams per cup

pounds = grams ÷ 453.59237

Worked examples

Two cups of all-purpose flour: 2 × 120 g = 240 g = approximately 0.5291 lb. One cup of almond flour: 96 g = approximately 3.386 oz. 100 g of granulated sugar: 100 ÷ 198 ≈ 0.505 US cups.

Kitchen reference weights vary with brands, temperature, packing and measuring technique. Flour and sugar values are adapted from King Arthur Baking's ingredient weight chart; liquid quantities are practical approximations. The original recipe's own gram measurements or a scale should take priority when precision matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 cup always the same number of grams?

No. Each ingredient has its own approximate grams per cup. Packing and measuring technique may also change the actual mass.

Can I convert grams back to cups?

Yes. Select grams as the starting unit and US cups as the destination. The selected ingredient's reference weight is used for both directions.

Does this measure UK cups?

No. Cup, tablespoon and teaspoon options are based on US customary kitchen measurements. Other cup conventions may differ.
