Formula and method
Pounds = cups × grams per US cup ÷ 453.59237. Ingredient reference amounts are approximate and packing changes the actual result.
Worked example
For example, 2 US cups of all-purpose flour at 120 g per cup is approximately 0.5291 lb.
Why the ingredient matters
One US customary cup is a volume measure of 236.5882365 mL. Two cups of flour and two cups of sugar do not weigh the same. Ingredient density, scooping, aeration, and packing affect the actual weight.
Reference weights
| Ingredient | Approx. grams per US cup |
|---|---|
| All-purpose flour, spooned and leveled | 120 g |
| Granulated sugar | 200 g |
| Butter | 227 g |
| Water at room temperature | 236.588 g |
For precision baking, use a kitchen scale and the recipe author’s stated gram weights.
