What this calculator answers
This tool starts with a known total price and a known weight. It divides the price by total pounds to reveal the price of one pound. The ounces field is converted to a fraction of a pound before division.
price per pound = total price ÷ total pounds
Example
A 3 lb 8 oz item weighs 3.5 lb. If it costs US$12.25, the calculation is:
US$12.25 ÷ 3.5 lb = US$3.50 per lb
When unit price helps
- Comparing different package sizes at a grocery store
- Checking bulk food or produce prices
- Normalising material or ingredient quotes
- Comparing a per-pound listing with a per-kilogram listing
